1. The Cultural Masterplan/ A blooming hub. The future Kristiansand cultural hub is conceived as a composition of different elements tangent to an open and public field. The former grain silo will vertically overlap the NT Collection and the SKMU, the Cultural School will horizontally activate the site, a public garden will float over it. The project aim to act on the East side, shifting from the actual “back-of-house” configuration to a centripetal morphology. This operation that orchestrates volumes around a public void will echo the urban qualities of a Renaissance plaza with its “palazzi” around. The coral strategy allows an hight degree of secability of the intervention, with the potential of responding well to needs of the different program blocs, a grid that will ensure for an easy phasing making the master plan robust and flexible.
2. The Cultural School / The field. The hearth of the new cultural quarter is a floating garden, a lyric place sensitive to seasons and flows. The constellation of indoor/outdoor spaces, with the plastic silos façade as a scene, will function as a green house investigating on the notions of artificial and natural environment. The mitigated climate will allow people to enjoy the space during the winter. The complex as a whole will benefit from the chimney effect creating a natural ventilation system. On the bottom an intense collage of rooms support to the different forms of art creation and open to the views of the passer-by.
3. The Museum Complex/ The Silo. The silo’s volume is restored to its 1953 configuration, while its section is animated to create extraordinarily generous spaces. The intervention on the façade is limited to preserve the functionalist aesthetic. The slabs of the lavblokk will be reinforced. The lift tower will be emptied to replace the elevators. Inside the silos, where part of the cylindrical cells in reinforced concrete are demolished, new vertical structures will be added to support the new floors created. The total gross surface is 9,785sqm, 7,110sqm in the existing silo and 2,675sqm in the podium extension. The annexes volumes had a total capacity of 4,710sqm open to further evolution of density, program and users. The museum entrance is located on the North-West corner, open to the shore and along the tourists circuit. The School multiple entrances are located on the East to intersect the community flows and to multiply the possible paths. The shared program on the ground level, foyer, café, bookshop, events space and auditorium, are arranged on a North-South axis to encourage to cross the site and interact with the School. The site is totally pedestrian, with the exception of Sjølystveien leading to Kanabyen. The public level, lifted up on the garden, could be possibly connected to the hill overpassing the road. The loading/unloading area is absorbed by the podium and shared between the museum and the cultural school. Located on the North side, it will be easily connected to the Kilden. Closed volumes such as concert halls, service and technical spaces and the parking are located underground.
Annex program/ Surrounding volumes.
In a further development phase the masterplan will be enriched by complementary programs related to the art domain, reinforcing the offer on the site. On the South a small tower for creative working spaces (workshops, creative offices, co-working spaces) and on the East an hospitality building (hotel or residence for artist).
